Beijing Fengtai Lizhi Rehabilitation Center, established in August 2000, is a non-governmental and non-profit organization providing services to pre-school children and mentally or intellectually challenged persons above 15 years old. The adult training center of the organization is located in southwest of Fengtai District of Beijing and covers an area of 3,600 square meters with a building area of 2,080 square meters. The Lizhi Kindergarten of the center is in the Ziguangyuan Community east to World Park with two buildings covering an area of 530 square meters and one villa courtyard covering an area of 280 square meters. The kindergarten enjoys a graceful environment and is well equipped with supporting facilities. The center was officially registered as a non-governmental and non-profit organization at the Bureau of Civil Affairs of the Fengtai District in May 2003, and the registration code is 749353190.

Aiming at “helping the mentally or intellectually challenged to survive, to behave and to be a useful person to the society”, the center provides professional services to the mentally or intellectually challenged people across the country. According to the levels and needs of the students, the center provides services with different focus. Now the following programs are available: regular service, home-stay service, occupational rehabilitation service, vocational skill training, supportive employment service and pre-school educational program. 

Regular service: It focuses on the mentally or intellectually challenged people above 15 years old. We guide them on setting daily, weekly, monthly and yearly activity plan, so that they can manage their daily life. We organize them to join daily activities in the community, such as communication, entertainment, self-caring, housework, etc.

Home-stay service: We offer home-stay services for people with mental or intellectual disabilities. We provide supportive and nursing services in their daily activities, healthcare and entertainment.

 Occupational rehabilitation service: For the mentally or intellectually challenged people at the working age with self-caring and working abilities and the desire to work or to receive training, we provide a variety of training on work personality, communication skills, vocational skills, community living and daily life abilities.

Supportive employment service: For the students who have received vocational training, we will provide internship opportunities, community independent living skills, supportive employment and its follow-up services. For the students who already have a job, we will provide reemployment training services.

 Pre-school educational program: For the 0-7 year old children with mental or intellectual disabilities, we provide daycare and door-to-door services in the following areas: self care, cognitive perception, gross bodily movement, finely coordinated movement, language training and social adaptation, etc.

 After research by the committee of the Fengtai Lizhi Rehabilitation Center, the Lizhi Vocational Skill Training School was founded in October 2007 in order to meet the practical needs for vocational training and employment of the mentally or intellectually challenged people. Now there are six specialties in the school: household management, restaurant service, room service, flower arrangement, landscape architect and computer data entry. The school has its own unique characteristics in terms of the concept of running a school and operating model.

1.      Work-study educational pattern: We cooperate with enterprises and provide position oriented training according to the need of the companies.

2.      Teams of double teachers and double workers: Specialized teachers, special education teachers, technical workers and social workers coordinate together, so the students can grow into employees who can observe normal orders and operational rules under the double support of the teachers and workers.

3.      One guiding principle: gradual training and life-long education. We aim at providing more opportunities for the mentally or intellectually challenged people to enhance their survival ability and increase their self value.

 The teachers in the center specialize in such areas as special education, social work, nursing, civil management, education and child welfare. We attach great importance to the enhancement of professional abilities of the staff, so we can provide high quality professional services to people. 

Now there are more than 70 students and 36 teachers (including two part time teachers and four used to be the students in the center) in the center. The center has already provided rehabilitation training services for more than 600 students while more than 500 students have returned to the community with more than 60 of them working at competitive posts in the society (such as cleaning, restaurant service, cook assistant, household management service, floriculture, supermarket staff, greening, etc.) to support themselves and to relieve the financial burden of their families and the society.

The center adheres to human management and providing professional services since its establishment. And it has made great achievements in its professional team development and professional services provided. In 2001, Mr. Deng Pufang, president of the Chinese Disabled Persons’ Federation, visited the center and gave the inscription of “Priceless Love”. In 2002 the center earned the title of “Advanced Society in the Work for Beijing Disabled Person”. In October 2002, the center as the only NGO attended the nation wide mentally challenged adult rehabilitation training program, and was conferred “Beijing Fengtai Mentally Challenged Adult Rehabilitation Training Service Center”. In October 2003, the center as the only NGO attended the nation wide mentally challenged adult rehabilitation training seminar in Hong Kong. In December 2004, the center was awarded “Beijing’s Advanced NGO”. In 2004 and 2005, the center received the evaluation of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Civil Affairs, Bureau of Health, Education Department and the Disabled Persons’ Federation, and was assessed as Level Three Organization in 2005 and Level Two Organization from 2005 to 2008. During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the center was awarded as “Advanced Society of Beijing Olympics and Paralympics”. In May 2009, the Lizhi Vocational Skill Training School was awarded “Excellence in Contribution in Vocational Skill Training” in Fengtai District from 2006 to 2008.
